Entertainment, Christians, and The Hallowed Death

Last night was another launch of a Harry Potter movie. You know the Deathly Hollows Part 2. Sounds good, right? Now I didn’t go see the movie, nor do I plan to, or have I seen past shows. Yet I find a great number of my friends going to see this movie and it saddens me. Over what entertains us (me). It has me thinking about the movie choices that we all enjoy.

One of my favorite hymns is “When I Survey the Wonderous Cross.” In it is a line that says;

All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

I don’t think those words have impacted me more than now. What things charm me most and how vain they might be. I am not just saddened by the movies my friends watch but also movies I’ve watched. I am not against entertainment that is good and clean. Like those from the image above. But entertainment at the expense of Christ’s blood? Some movies just might be a deathly hollow rather than hallowed death for some professing Christians.

I remember once someone close to me said that they think Paul would go see bad movies to know the culture. I don’t think so! You just need to read the news paper and see a commercial to know what our culture is into. “For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” 1 Corinthians 6:14. The answer later is in verse 17 …to come out and be separate. But I will admit that it is not easy. It can only happen by the Spirit of God.

So friends. Let us consider the value of our movie choices. Does our desire for entertainment supersede the cost of Jesus’ blood? I sure hope not. May Christ be hallowed and his death remembered!
