Every Wednesday I have the priviledge of teaching a Bible study to children. Our curriculum is the Bible. We have been going through Ephesians for some time and lying is the current topic. This is from our couple of weeks on lying from Ephesians 4:25.
Therefore, putting away lying, “ Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,”[e] for we are members of one another.
The nature of lying. This is an interesting sin because I find that we don’t need examples to teach us this. If you have children you will find at some point they will lie to you and others and ask yourself who has taught them to lie? The answer is not you, your spouse or a friend but from their own inclination. By nature we lie.
The types of lying. There are a great number of lies that we can come up with.
White lies. Partial truths mixed with something that isn’t true. As seen with Ananias and Sapphira. Acts 5:1-4
Fabrications. This is just out right lies that are not true. Exemplified in Satan in the Garden and Peter at Jesus death. Genesis 3:4,5; Luke 22:60.
Misdirection/ Implying. A lie that leads someone think something. This was best illustrated by Joseph’s brothers. Genesis 37:31-33
Self Deception. This can be a delusion that something is true when it is not. Galations 6:7
Claiming Ignorance: Cain did this as did Peter. Genesis 4:9;
The penalty of lying. Lying is clearly marked out in the Bible as a breaking of the ten commandments. Revelations 21:8 ..all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Proverbs 30:
Every word of God is pure;
He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.
6 Do not add to His words,
Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.
May we avoid the penalty of lying.
The remedy for lying is truth. Lying is an impossible habit to kick without God. Psalm 51:6 Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts… As it is stated earlier that each one of us should speak the truth with his neighbor. Especially to those who are in the house of God.
For we are members of one another
The antidote is the word of God. Psalm 119:60 The entirety of your word is truth. Again in John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. We are not free from the bondage of lying until we know the truth. (John 8:32)
